Ullensvang is not only the largest fruit garden in Norway, with its 450.000 fruit trees. The fjord and the green luxuriant hills stretching up towards the Folgefonna glacier has for more than a century been a tempting destination for travellers from all over the world. The local vicar hosted travellers already in the 18th century. And the famous norwegian painters Tidemand and Gude have shown their impressions through Norway's most famous painting, "The Bridal Journey of Hardanger". "Had I known it was so beautiful here, I would have come before", said Björnstjerne Björnson, a Norwegian author. Hotel Ullensvang is family owned, and has been since the establishing in 1846. Perhaps the most famous guest through all these years, is the composer Edvard Grieg. He came for the first time in 1878, and spent many summers, and one winter, in Lofthus. In Lofthus, he found the inspiration for music like "Springtime", "The Holberg Suite" and "Peer Gynt Suite". His composers cabin is still here, displayed in the hotel garden, and the surrounding nature can still inspire and impress even the greatest travelers!
The year is 1891. Europes aristocracy and upper classes seek new and exciting destinations with spectacular scenery. The clientele for which the Union Hotel in Øye by the Hjørund fjord opened its doors this year was fastidious. The guest register shows a line of success: Queen Willemina of the Netherlands, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany, King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway, and Queen Maud and King Haakon VII of Norway are some of the royalty who enjoyed their stay. The hotel was restored in the original style in 1989, and now appears as it did in its heyday.

Travellers have been enjoying food and shelter here since 1722, when Peder Larsson Børsem first acquired a licence to receive guests, and up to the present day. The hotel has a three-hundred year tradition of care and consideration for its guests. The tradition was personified by Mother Utne (Torbjørg Utne, 1812 1903). Since the hotel was built in 1722 it has been extended, upgraded and restored at different types, most recently in winter 2003/2004. The Utne Hotel has to be experienced. A stay here is akin to living in a history book. Building details, household items and decor have been carefully preserved.
