Hi Ulla,
Thanks for all you did. We had an excellent trip. The hotels in Bergen and Oslo were great. Their staff was extremely helpful. The breakfasts in Oslo were outstanding!
The tour guides in Bergen and Oslo were great. We really felt we learned a lot. The tour guide in Copenhagen was not well suited to us. She knew about the monarchy and told anecdotes about seeing them, but her knowledge of anything else was poor. Our tour up to Elsinore and Hamlet’s castle would have been better if it had included less about the monarchy and other castles and instead stopped in Roskilde as I had mentioned we were interested in seeing Viking museums and it was hard to get to on our own. That was the kind of personalization of the tours that I expected.
The only major difficulty we had was on the Norway in a nutshell. There was nowhere to get any gluten free food, and no time (since the boat was late getting into port) to even try to get anything before the cog railroad. We ended up famished and exhausted. Nowhere on that whole trip was there an clear signage. It was very haphazard. While beautiful, it was poorly done.
The cities were great. We loved Bergen, Oslo, and Copenhagen. Some of the highlights for us were the food markets and in Copenhagen there is a fabulous museum called the David Collection which was brilliantly curated, free, and has one of the world’s best Islamic Art collections. While not for everyone, it is something you should know about. We also went to the historical museum, art museum, tivoli, and hired a canal boat on our own. They were each excellent.
Our hotel in Copenhagen, which we booked on our own, (Hotel Kong Arthur) had a great location. The breakfasts weren’t included, and were overpriced, but we found other places in the area that we liked. It was also really easy to take the metro to the airport from there. It was easy to take a bus to the hotel in Bergen and my son had no difficulty getting a bus to the hotel in Oslo.
Thanks again,
Amy
