Alta is a great choice for visitors seeking to experience the magic of the Northern Lights. Sinc year 2000 Alta has been named the city of the Northern Lights. The stable climate with many days of clear sky and the very good weather conditions are reasons why several international scientific expeditions carried out in Alta. In 1899 Kristian Birkeland built the world's first Northern Lights observatory at the top of Mt. Haldde. Visitors have always been delighted by the Northern Lights, which are also called the Aurora Borealis, and there are many myths associated with them. When visiting Alta, you can learn more about what the Northern Lights actually are and the best way of seeing them, and obviously more about the myths and stories associated with them.

Arrive Alta – the City of the Northern Lights!

Meet with your pre-booked taxi at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Your driver will meet you in the arrival hall with a sign.

7.00pm – 11.30pm Hunting the Northern Lights tour The tour will take you in the direction where it’s most likely to catch the Northern Lights, and along the way you can experience the ever changing landscape of the Arctic from the wind and silence on the Finnmark Plateau to the sea breeze of the fjord. You and the Northern Lights are the focus during the tour – and our guide is open to any questions you might have along the way. As well as knowledge about the Northern Lights, our guides know the local history and can tell you stories about the culture and history of Alta. As a plus the guide has basic photo knowledge and all pictures taken during the tour will be sent to you after the tour is finished. Please note: Northern Light is a nature phenomenon, so no guarantee can be given. Some weeks, you are treated to fantastic displays, repeated several times during the evening. Other times, the snow falls densely, or the northern lights simply stay away. Activities can be cancelled on short notice, due to bad weather conditions or lack of snow!

Notes: Guests are asked to leave their luggage in the secure luggage room of your hotel in Alta. A small overnight bag is all you will need with your essentials. This should include thermal underwear, pullover, a warm comfortable hat to sleep in, warm socks and toiletries. The Igloo Hotel will provide you with warm sleeping bags and sheets, as well as additional clothing if necessary.

Breakfast at the hotel.

Meet the staff from Sorrisniva for transfer to the dog sledding. Enjoy a 3hrs. Dog Sledding tour along the Alta River. If needed, you will get warm clothing to match the winter weather, and then you will be taken to meet your guides and dog team.

Two people share one sled and one person is the passenger while the other mushes. You can switch places during the tour. On this tour you get to see glimpses of a musher’s life. After proper instruction for handling the sled, it's time to head out for a ride! Your ride will take

you into the forest outside of Alta and along the bank of the frozen Alta River. Whether you are riding in the morning or in the dim arctic afternoon twilight, you'll be delighted by your natural surroundings and the silent, steady pace of your sturdy and dependable dogs. If

you're lucky, you might even catch sight of a moose or other wildlife along the way! When you return to the farm, you will head indoors to our Lavvo (a traditional Sami tent) where you'll warm up around a fire with a hot drink. One of crew will answer questions and talk about racing dogs and life on the husky farm. And of course, there will be some extra time to visit and take pictures of your new four-legged friends, before returning to Sorrisniva Ice Hotel.

After the dog sledding the staff will transfer you to the Ice Hotel. Upon the arrival check in and enjoy surroundings, walk inside of the hotel and around, take photos of ice sculptures.

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is the world’s northernmost ice hotel and is approximately 2500 sqm large. All exterior and interior is made of snow and ice – even the glasses in the bar! The hotel has approx. 30 rooms which are uniquely decorated. Inside the hotel you’ll also find a main gallery, an ice chapel and an ice bar. The hotel is decorated with ice sculptures and snow decorations on the vast snow walls. The decoration and the pure white snow create a magical atmosphere inside. The main wooden building in Sorrisniva contains a large restaurant, locker rooms, toilets, shower, sauna, lounge with fireplace, luggage room and reception.

6.00pm A 2 - course country style dinner based on local ingredients, cultivated, gathered and harvested in the region. The dinner will be served in a tranquil atmosphere were all elements plays together.

8.00pm Meet the guide and departure for a 2,5 hrs. Reindeer & Sami Experience. Two people share one sled while the reindeer lead you along a pre-made track.

Hot drinks are served in a traditional Sami Lavvo while your Sami guides tell you about the Sami way of life and their culture. There might also be a chance to experience the traditional Sami Joik. A song dedicated to family, nature or other things close to heart.

10.30pm Returning to the Igloo Hotel.

Day 3     Alta

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch

Enjoy breakfast in the restaurant at Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel.

11:30am Departure Snowmobile Safari.

Notice: remember to bring your driver licence!

Feel the thrill driving through varied landscape in the forest, over the wide white expanse and over frozen lakes up to the mountain plateau. Listen to the total silence when stopping on the plateau and experience the ever-changing Arctic light during the winter time.

Choose to drive your own snowmobile or share it with a friend. You will drive your own snowmobile from Sorrisniva to Jotka Mountain Lodge located at the Finnmark plateau 30 km from Sorrisniva. Enjoy a warm lunch at Jotka Mountain Lodge. Daylight changes dramatically during the winter season, from the gloom of Arctic sunrise to the dazzling bright skies that are common later in the season. No matter when you go, it will be a delightful experience, especially once we drive up and onto the Finnmark plateau with

its wide, white snow-covered expanse. Overnight in Alta.

Meals: Breakfast

Enjoy a nice breakfast at your hotel. Your pre-booked transfer will meet at the front desk and take you to the airport for your flight to your next destination!
