Taste of Faroe Islands

4 Days / 4 locations in Iceland and Faroe Islands

Located in the North Atlantic between Iceland and Norway, the Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 volcanic islands shaped by ocean, weather, and centuries of Nordic tradition. Dramatic cliffs, small villages with grass-roofed houses, strong food culture, and close-knit communities define the experience.

The Faroe Islands have a food culture shaped by the North Atlantic. Fresh fish, lamb grazed on coastal hills, and fermented foods that sustained islanders through centuries still appear on tables today. This 4-day tour connects you with that tradition through meals at local restaurants, visits to producers, and time in T贸rshavn, one of the world鈥檚 smallest capitals.

You鈥檒l eat at restaurants where chefs work with Faroese ingredients and traditional techniques. Between meals, you鈥檒l explore T贸rshavn鈥檚 historic quarters, meet local makers and shop owners, and take a day trip north with a guide who knows the islands well. The tour includes threeLonely platen travel awards nights in one hotel, keeping the pace relaxed with time to explore on your own.

This is a food tour, but it鈥檚 also about the people who make the food and the places where it comes from. You鈥檒l hear stories from locals, see how the landscape influences what people eat, and get a sense of daily life in the Faroes through shared meals and conversations.

Itinerary

Day 1     Reykjavik

Your tour begins with a flight from Keflav铆k to V谩gar Airport. Transfer to T贸rshavn and check into Havgr铆m Seaside Hotel, your base for three nights.

The afternoon and evening are yours. T贸rshavn is small and easy to walk. We recommend starting with a local beer at a caf茅鈥攂oth OY and F酶roya Bj贸r brew in the Faroes using local water.

For dinner, you might try ROKS, where the focus is on fresh Faroese seafood (dinner at own expense). Or ask at your hotel for other recommendations within walking distance.

Accommodation: Havgr铆m Seaside Boutique Hotel or similar

Day 2     Torshavn
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Meet your private guide for a walking tour of T贸rshavn鈥檚 oldest areas, Tinganes and Reyn. These neighborhoods are protected and still lived in, so your guide will explain the importance of respecting residents and historic buildings as you walk.

Tinganes sits on a small peninsula and houses the Faroese government in red timber buildings that date back centuries. Reyn has grass-roofed houses along narrow lanes. Your guide will share stories about how these areas developed and what daily life looks like here today.

Lunch at ETIKA: This restaurant combines Faroese fish with Japanese techniques. The menu changes based on what鈥檚 available, and the kitchen prioritizes traceability and seasonal ingredients.

The afternoon is free. T贸rshavn has several studios and shops selling Faroese wool products, handmade crafts, and local design. Many caf茅s in town offer home-baked goods and locally sourced items. Your guide can suggest specific places based on your interests.

Dinner at 脕arstova: This restaurant operates in a preserved building and serves traditional Faroese dishes with modern preparation. The menu focuses on local producers.

Walking Distance: Approximately 2-3 km during the morning tour

Activity Level: Light (easy walking, some stairs in old quarters)

Day 3     Torshavn - Streymoy - Eysturoy
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Your private guide picks you up for a full day exploring north of T贸rshavn. The exact route depends on weather and road conditions, but typically includes stops in Streymoy and Eysturoy islands.

The day is paced for photos, short walks, and conversation. Your guide will explain how people live in these remote areas, what the settlements looked like historically, and how the landscape shaped Faroese culture.

Lunch is included at a local venue along the route.

You return to T贸rshavn by late afternoon.

Dinner at Barbara Fish House: Located in an old turf-roofed building, this restaurant works directly with Faroese fishermen. The menu is based on seasonal catches and changes regularly.

Driving Time: Approximately 3-4 hours total (with frequent stops)

Walking: Short walks at each stop, mostly on paved or maintained paths

Day 4     Torshavn - Reykjavik
Meals: Breakfast

After check-out, transfer to the airport. If you have time, visit Miklagar冒ur in the SMS centre to purchase local goods such as dried fish or sustainably harvested salmon.

Faroese beer, that is available at the airport Duty-Free, makes a good, low-impact souvenir, brewed with local ingredients and short transport distances.
