Highlights of Faroe Islands

6 Days / 9 locations in Iceland and Faroe Islands

Experience the Untamed Beauty of the Faroe Islands – Nature, Culture & Local Life

Venture beyond Iceland to one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 volcanic islands where dramatic cliffs plunge into the North Atlantic, grass-roofed villages cling to mountainsides, and ancient Nordic traditions remain woven into daily life. With fewer than 5,000 annual visitors to some islands, you’ll experience an authenticity that’s increasingly rare in modern travel.

This 6-day journey takes you deep into Faroese life. You’ll hike and stand where waterfalls crash directly into the ocean, navigate tunnels carved through mountains, and share stories with local farmers and fishermen. Our carefully designed itinerary balances iconic landscapes withLonely platen travel awards hidden corners, guided exploration with personal discovery, and includes all logistics so you can focus entirely on the experience.

Led by knowledgeable local guides who call these islands home, you’ll gain insights that go far beyond the landscape—understanding how weather shapes culture, how isolation breeds resilience, and why the Faroese people remain deeply connected to land and sea. Whether you’re watching storm clouds race across Vágar, exploring the colorful streets of Tórshavn, or standing at the edge of Europe, this tour reveals the Faroe Islands as they truly are: wild, welcoming, and unforgettable.

Itinerary

Day 1     Reykjavik

Your tour begins with a flight from Keflavík to Vágar Airport. Your driver meets you for the journey north to Klaksvík, the Faroes’ second-largest town and your base for the northern islands.

The 90-minute drive takes you through sub sea tunnels, along clifftop roads, and past communities that sit in landscapes that seem impossible to inhabit.

After checking into the hotel, the afternoon and evening are yours. We recommend walking along the harbor where fishing boats anchor, or visiting Christianskirkjan church with its boat-shaped ceiling. For dinner, ask your hotel to recommend restaurants where you can try Faroese cuisine—fermented lamb or fresh fish.

Day 2     Klaksvik - Bordoy - Torshavn - Vidoy
Meals: Breakfast

Today you explore the northern islands with a local guide. The tour takes you through Viðoy, Borðoy, and Kunoy—islands where populations number in the dozens.

Your route includes villages like Hvannasund on a narrow strait, Viðareiði near Cape Enniberg sea cliffs (the highest vertical sea cliff in Europe), and Múli, which was only connected by road in 2010. Your guide explains how these communities survive winters, maintain their identities, and why people choose to stay.

The Food Farmers experience connects you with producers who use traditional methods. You might visit a sheep farmer whose animals graze on salt-sprayed hillsides, learn about fermented and wind-dried foods, or taste røst (fermented fish) and ræst (fermented lamb).

By late afternoon, you travel south through the Northern Isles Tunnel to TĂłrshavn, where you spend the night.

Accommodation: Hotel Djurhuus or similar

Day 3     Torshavn - Streymoy - Gjogv, Faroe Islands - Eysturoy
Meals: Breakfast

This morning you travel through Streymoy and Eysturoy with a private guide. The day includes Saksun village with its tidal lagoon and mountain backdrop, then Tjørnuvík where the black-sand beach faces two sea stacks called the Giant and the Witch. You stop at Fossá, the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, before traveling toward the road below Slættaratindur, the country’s highest peak.

The tour continues to GjĂłgv, a village with a natural gorge and coastal views, where you have time to walk and eat lunch. Before returning to TĂłrshavn you see the mountain views above Funningur.

Accommodation: Hotel Djurhuus or similar

Day 4     Vagar Island
Meals: Breakfast

Today you travel west to Vágar. The day begins with a drive along the old mountain road to Norðadalsskarð, a high pass with views across Streymoy’s fjords.

You enter one of the sub sea tunnels that goes 150 meters below the North Atlantic before reaching Vágar. Your first stop is Gásadalur, a village that was only accessible by foot or helicopter until 2004. Here you see Múlafossur waterfall that drops from the village into the Atlantic below.

The main activity is a hike to Trælanípan (Slave Cliff), starting from Lake Leitisvatn. This walk takes approximately 1.5 hours round trip and brings you to a clifftop viewpoint where the lake appears to hover 100 meters above the ocean. You’ll also see Bøsdalafossur waterfall where the lake drains into the sea, and the sea stack Geituskoradrangur standing offshore.

Day 5     Torshavn
Meals: Breakfast

This morning a local guide leads a walking tour of TĂłrshavn. The walk includes Skansin, the old fort above the harbor, Tinganes with its timber government buildings, and Reyn where grass-roofed houses line narrow lanes. You walk past the Cathedral and nearby streets.

The rest of the day is free to visit museums, cafés or coastal paths around town.

Day 6     Torshavn - Vagar Island - Reykjavik
Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast a private transfer takes you back to Vágar Airport for your return flight to Keflavík, marking the end of your private tour in the Faroe Islands.
