Stockholm, Sweden

Welcome to Stockholm, the Royal Capital of Sweden. Discover a city like no other - a city built on 14 islands, where you are never far from the water. Well-preserved medieval buildings stand alongside modern architecture. Stockholm is also home of the Nobel Prize. And just outside the city, the archipelago of 24,000 islands is waiting to be explored.

Stockholm is a city of contrasts - water and islands, history and innovation, small town and big city, short winter days and long, light summer nights - with a dazzling array of impressions. Thanks to the city's compact size, you can see and do most things in a short space of time - which makes it a perfect destination for city breaks or longer stays, all the year round.

Go back 750 years in time and feel the medieval atmosphere of the Old Town "Gamla Stan" as you wander through the narrow streets. Stockholm has got history - but also the latest in fashion and IT. The trendy Stockholmers are often used as a test market by international companies, as they are quick to pick up on the latest trends. This is most obvious on the island of Sodermalm, a hotbed of fashion, young culture and entertainment.

Stockholm is one third water, one third green belt and one third city. The island of Djurgarden, the world's first National City Park, is only a short walk from the pulse of the inner city. Stockholmers and visitors alike come here to relax in the leafy shade and rest their eyes on green.

In Sweden, the seasons are another contrast. Light summer nights when the sun barely dips below the horizon and short, snowy winter days. Because the city changes with every season and there is always something special to do, Stockholm is worth visiting at any time of year.

The Vasa Museum

The Vasa Ship - From wreck to restoration

When the Vasa set sail in 1628, she was probably the world´s most powerful warship. With 64 cannon and 300 men, she was sure to put the fear of God in the enemy, but she sank on her maiden voyage. When the Vasa was raised in 1961, a new adventure began - one that is still under way.

The smell of tarred wood

With an audience watching all the while, the wreck has been restored as a fully rigged ship. This grand warship from 1628 is almost wholly preserved, and is the only one of its type in the world. It is currently berthed in Scandinavia´s most popular museum - the Vasa Museum.

The ship is also a fantastic treasure trove of art, with almost a thousand wooden sculptures.

The bold architecture of the Vasa Museum houses several exhibitions, multimedia installations and many interesting finds that were raised along with the ship. The museum fascinates everyone, young and old. During the summer months, guided tours in several languages are held hourly. The film on the Vasa is available in several language versions. The museum, shop and restaurant have won numerous prizes.

Modern Museum

Stockholm´s museum of modern art, Moderna Museet, is renowned for its presentation of innovative Swedish and international contemporary art since 1958. One of Europe´s finest, the museum´s collection of modern classics spans the entire 20th century up to today with pieces by Matisse, Picasso, Dalí, Klee, and Rauschenberg to name but a few. Spain-born architect Rafael Moneo designed the new building housing the museum that opened in 1998. Moderna Museet is a world-class attraction with its constantly changing exhibitions, free admission and bustling restaurant that provides a sensational view over the city. The museum even has a popular shop that sells catalogues, decorations, postcards, posters, and more. Perfectly set in the heart of the city on the inlet of Skeppsholmen, the museum is easily accessible with public transportation.
