Sisimiut, Greenland

Hospitality has always been an important part of the Greenland culture. This is of course a consequence of the fact that from a historical point of view we have lived in small and rather isolated societies. The guests who visited the societies were more or less our only connection to the outside world and therefore we welcomed them.

During the last decades, the development has been incredible. Aeroplanes, ships, telephones etc. have meant that our part-isolation has been broken. The development has also resulted in new requirements, however, the connection to the outside world is still important to us.

Therefore, it is always our pleasure to welcome people to Sisimiut. We hope that you will enjoy your stay and that you will get a good impression of our society and the magnificent nature surrounding us.

Sisimiut has 5965 inhabitants and is therefore Greenland's second largest municipality. Our position in the middle of Greenland gives us a combination of the North and South Greenland culture and habits of life. Furthermore, Sisimiut is a modern town with a fast increasing rate of growth. The traditional main industry of the town is fisheries and we are the home town for the world's most modern shrimp peeling factory. However, in recent years where the fishing industry has experienced rough times, it is the land based sectors in particular that have had more success.

In Sisimiut we work hard to make our guests benefit from their stay. As a growing tourist destination we keep on offering more and more arrangements.

However, if you like to discover them on your own, you may find many fantastic adventures in the scenery and in the cultural life of the town.

Sights

Boat Trips

Summer is time for sailing - and people sail a lot in Greenland!

On most of the sails you will get a chance to see seals, whales and birds. You will never forget a nice sail in one of the inlets of the area. The sails which may last from a couple of hours to a whole day are arranged by people acquainted with the locality and who have a wide knowledge of the Greenland history, culture and nature.

A sail to the present and closed down districts of the municipality is recommendable. The same applies to a combined sail and hike.

Hiking Trips

Sisimiut is surrounded by the sea and impressive hills. "Præstefjeldet" (the priest hill) toi the north and "Kællingehætten" (the old woman's hood) to the south challenge the visitors to go hiking. Because of the long distance to the Inland Ice, you may find an endless hinterland east of the town which offers rich opportunities.

It is not always easy to find your way and, therefore, the local areas have marked hiking routes of various difficulty from quiet hikes to exiting hill climbings. For further information on the markings, please contact the Sisimiut Tourist Information.

Dog Sledge Trips

As soon as the snow and ice allow to do so, it is possible to experience the unique nature from a dog sledge pulled by real Greenland dogs.

The dogs live in harmony with nature and are not pets. The passengers should therefore keep an appropriate distance and not approach the dogs without the permission of the coachman.

When you have had a ride in a dog sledge where you have felt an authentic glimpse of the past and felt in harmony with nature, you will never be the same again.

It is not possible to describe a ride in a dog sledge - it is something you simply have to try out yourself!

There are many possibilities when it comes to dog sledge rides - e.g. from rides lasting two hours and rides lasting several weeks.

The dog sledge season is from the middle of December to the end of April.

Snow Scooter Trips

In recent years, snow scooters have become a very popular leisure vehicle when people want to leave the daily life in town quickly. After a 10 minutes' drive, you find yourself in a magnificent nature filled with experiences and adventures.

The snow scooters are used as means of transport to the ski lift as well as in connection with arranged trips of various duration.

You may either drive together with an experienced snow scooter driver or rent a snow scooter and drive yourself together with a guide.
