The building Hotel Koli is in is owned by the government, which has also funded basic repairs. It is rented out to Hotelli Koli Oy, to function as a hotel. It is indeed unique in Finland as a National Park hotel. An architectural competition was set up to find the best design to blend the building into the hill landscape surrounding it. 96 different designs were submitted of which the design by architects Ilkka Svärd and Pia Sopanen won. This architectural facelift was carried out in 1999, when basic repairs were done on the building.
