Subiaco![]() MONASTERY OF ST. BENEDICT OF NURSIA ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SubiacoSubiaco is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in Lazio, central Italy, 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Tivoli alongside the river Aniene. It is a tourist and religious resort because of its sacred grotto (Sacro Speco), in the medieval St Benedict's Abbey, and its Abbey of Santa Scolastica. Subiaco is where Benedict of Nursia began his first experience as a hermit at the age of 17. The Sacro Speco, or Holy Grotto, where he spent 3 years as a recluse, is to be found inside the monastery. The monastery itself is embedded in the cliffside above the river Aniene. Saint Benedictine’s Monastery is open every day from 9 to 12.15am and from 3.30 to 6.15pm. |
