Transportation by train, accommodation at hotels and exotic visits and outing trips. A journey to remember.

Sweden's Inland Railway runs from Mora to Gallivare at a speed of 30 miles per hour through unspoiled landscapes of deep forests and beautiful lakes. Elk, bear, reindeer and other wild animals can often be seen from the train windows. The railcar makes several stops along the way where you can take pictures, pick wild berries or take a quick dip in a mountain lake. There are activities, attractions and museums along the way you can choose to enjoy.

The construction of The Inland Railway Line has been a gigantic job. The initial thoughts about connecting the upper part of Northern Sweden with Bohuslan came up in 1894 when a proposal was produced by Axel Rappe, chief of the general staff at that time. The parliament decided to build the first section of it. This was in 1907 when the first 125 km were constructed from Ostersund to Ulriksfors. In 1911 it was time for the next section: Ulriksfors-Volgsjaen or Vilhelmina, which is now the name of the place. In 1912 the "OK" was granted for the section: Sveg-Brunflo. In 1917 it was decided to build the section Vilhelmina-Gallivare. Between 1916 and 1918 the private railways from Sveg to Kristinehamn were purchased. That way The Inland Railway Line would get its the section Kristinehamn-Gallivare. It demanded 40 years of sweat, coldness and endless hardship for Axel Granholm and his troop of strong railway workers to install the 931 km long tracks trough inaccessible terrain, numberless moorland and mountains. It was reckoned upon that the entire Inland Railway Line would be completed in 1924, but this was not the case. War in Europe, lack of manpower and a prolonged depression delayed the project. It was not until the 6th of August 1937 when the grand inauguration by crown prince Gustav Adolf could take place. A memorial was erected in Jokkmokk. Costs for the completion of The Inland Railway Line amounted approximately 136 million crowns. Expenses concerning construction work reached up to 110 million crowns and the remaining 26 million were used for buying up the private railways.

Many people have joined together and fought for a common cause. Organizations, municipalities and regions have worked together to preserve The Inland Railway Line.
