Vimmerby, Sweden

Things are pretty much the same in Vimmerby today as they were when Astrid Lindgren lived here. You will still be able to see the small alleyways in the centre of town along with the enchanting countryside. But now there is also a theme park for the whole family, Astrid Lindgren's World. Come and see the real Katthult, Bullerbyn and much more.

Astrid Lindgren has placed Vimmerby on the map of the world. Pippi is not just the strongest girl in the world; she is also the most famous. Who has never heard of Pippi Longstocking!

While Astrid was growing up in Vimmerby she was inspired to great achievements. Everything you have read about in her books is to be found in Vimmerby. (Well, except for "Saltkråkan" and "Karlsson on the Roof" which were probably created somewhere else other than in Småland.)

Emil's enclosed fields, pastures and wooden fences are all over the place and so too are the haystacks, lakes and fantastic environments that the children who visit Bullerby enjoy even today. Things are very much as they were when Astrid lived here, but things have changed nevertheless. Vimmerby is now a small modern picturesque town but it still possesses the tranquillity and peacefulness it has always had.

Astrid Lindgren's World is the biggest attraction in the area. Other places to visit along the Astrid Lindgren theme include Näs, Katthult och Bullerbyn. There are also many who decide to come here simply to enjoy the fantastic countryside. Maybe to enjoy a spot of fishing in one of the many lakes; to paddle a canoe on the River Stångån or walk along one of the long-distance walking tracks

Astrid Lindgren's World is quite unique. It's a fairytale park with settings from Astrid Lindgren's stories. It's set among the woods and meadows where Astrid used to play as a child, and in the town and the region which gave her the inspiration for so many of her much-loved books.

Here children are free to play as much as they want. Here you will meet some of the characters from her books in the flesh - for example Emil, Pippi, Ronja and many others. The characters all play with the children and re-enact scenes from the books.

But you will also find normal playgrounds and picnic areas, horses, pigs, sheep, hens and many other animals. On stage in the wild Rose Valley there are theatrical performances during the summer.

We have several restaurants, cafés, shops, exhibitions and even a post office of our own with our own post office stamp.

At the cinema we show Astrid Lindgren's films throughout the day. You can buy sweets in the shop where Pippi bought 18 kilos of sweets or buy some lemonade at Pippi's lemonade tree.

Welcome To Astrid Lindgren's World.
