Vigo, Spain

Vigo is Galicia's most highly populated city and is located in the province of Pontevedra where, at one point in history, it was the provincial capitol. Although less famous than its Galician counterparts of Santiago de Compostela, La Coruna and Pontevedra, Vigo has retained its status as one of Galicia's major cities and is a hub for the regions economy.

With a population of over 300,000, Vigo is actually Galicia's largest city and enjoys substantial tourism, although mainly from domestic holiday makers travelling from other parts of Spain.

In addition to its impressive port, Vigo is also renown for having a climate with more similarities to the south of Spain than the north. The explanation for this is the "micro climate" that Vigo is able to enjoy and which results from its sheltered and protected location. Temperatures in Vigo are consequently 4 or 5 degrees higher than in the rest of Galicia, ensuring milder winters and hotter summers.

If you look at the history and geography of the Pontevedra province, it becomes evident that Vigo is not only larger than the provincial capitol of Pontevedra city, but also more important. In times past it was infact Vigo, and not Pontevedra, that was the capitol of this sea facing province and it is the harbour at Vigo that still deals with more trade than any other port in Galicia. In tourism terms Vigo does not readily slip off the tongue, but it is none-the-less a city that is rich in history and culture and which awaits any tourist wanting to experience "real Spain".
