Tasiilaq, Greenland

Tasiilaq is the largest town in Eastgreenland with a population of around 1700. The town is beautifully situated in a fjord surrounded by high mountains. Tasiillaq town is divided in 2 by a small river which flows down through Flower Valley behind the town. The unique arctic flora in the Flower Valley makes this a great place for a stroll or a trek.

At the towns highest point is a cairn, built to mark Tasiilaqs 50th anniversary in 1944. From this place one have a superb view of the whole town and the surrounding area. Characteristic for Tasiilaq, like other greenlandic towns, are the small wooden houses in all the colours of the rainbow. Several generations often share the same roof and have their dogs chained outside the house. Larger buildings however, also leap to the eye, such as the yellow-painted hospital and the modern municipality building. The centrally situated Greenland Philately which now employs a large staff, has become an important part of life in Tasiilaq.

The towns new pentagonal church was built in 1986. Its innerwalls, ceiling and alter were decorated by the Greenlandic artist Aka Høegh. The kneelers are of sealskin, decorated with Eastgreenlandic illustrations by a local crafts woman.

The towns first church from 1908 stands high above the harbour. Beautifully restored, it now houses the local museum with an interesting collection of objects from both recent and ancient history.
