Smedjebacken, Sweden

Smedjebacken is located in the Dalarna region. Here there are several fascinating places of interest:

Flogberget Visitor Mine

Flogberget mine is one of Swedens most interesting mining areas with about 15 pits. The mines lie on the top of a mountain and are drained mainly by an underground tunnel. It is an ingenious method since the mining could then be done without the use of drainage pumps. Mining was being done here as early as the 16th Century. You can study 3 different quarrying methods: fire setting, blasting with gunpowder and blasting with dynamite.

Flatenberg Foundry

References to the village of Flatenberg were recorded as far back as the 1300s. A foundry was established around 1600 by homestead miners. The present blast furnace was built by extending the old one in 1865; at that time a number of improvements were made. After 1918, following a period of decline after the First World War, the foundry was closed. It is now considered one of the most interesting mining environments of its type in Sweden. Large collection of tools. Several festivals take place here during the year.
