Ringkobing, Denmark

Ringkobing

It’s not all that easy to tell. But if you drive directly out to Lyngvig lighthouse and take the many stairs up to the top, you see it at once. It’s almost like being thrown into a loudspeaker which is extremely strong on one side but almost idyllically gentle on the other.

There’s water everywhere. And the people have to live on the water’s terms – on the one hand literally when swimming, on the other hand mentally when you sit down, contemplating the reflections in the water, the birds, the boats and the horizon to the east.

It’s the North Sea versus Ringkøbing Fjord and Skjern River – the free expression of energy and relaxation in one and the same glance, seconds between natural catastrophe and natural idyll, yin-yang in Danish, also reflected in the cultural landscape, its houses, architecture and towns.

It’s Hvide Sande versus Ringkøbing, Søndervig versus Skjern. It’s nothing gigantic, but there are fascinating and charming towns, each with its own idiom. They’re nature’s towns, close to storm and shelter. There’s no grandeur or urban throng, only a windswept and idyllic landscape. And it’s no surprise to learn that the biggest business is based on – wind energy.

There’s a special undertone of energy and industry everywhere which immediately seems natural, for this is where nature’s whims are conquered, and it takes strong people to do it. So as a big city person you may feel that you relax when you come to Ringkøbing Fjord. But at the same time, you will feel a strong impulse to blossom and develop, to be active, to do something – something entirely different from what you do at home.

There are rich options here for excursions into nature and the forthcoming national park. You can also play water sports in many ways, water ski on Denmark’s first water ski course, go windsurfing, kite surfing and wave surfing, and there’s good swimming.

We look forward to your visit to our area.
