Orsa, Sweden

Orsa- with about 7000 inhabitants- is the smallest community in Dalarna, but now again facing a bright future. Orsa is a peaceful village with beautiful surroundings and a number of scenic views, mostly over different parts of Lake Orsasjön. The nature with lakes, creeks and mountains was formed by a dramatic meteorite impact appr. 360 million years ago.

The village of Orsa was founded in the 16th century. In the late 19th century there was a strong development in Orsa in connection to the enormous cuttings of trees in the forests north of Orsa. In that period the centre of Orsa grew rapidly with a city hotel, railway station, city hall, etc. Orsa then became a wealthy community and had a strong development until the middle of the century. After that the growth slowed down, stopped and even reversed during the last half of the century.

Since the late 90s a new period of growth has started with a rising number of people moving in, increasing employment and a number of growth projects with a large number of people involved, focused on our profile areas Tourism, Wood, Music and Wildlife. During the last years the development has accelerated with large investments in tourism and an improved climate for cooperation, trade and industry, etc. In the coming year there will be large investments in the ski-, summer- and wildlife resort Orsa Grönklitt. An Austrian wood development company will establish a large wood industry in Orsa.

The municipality puts a lot of effort in developing Orsa to an attractive place to live in- for inhabitants, companies and organisations. We try to find new ways to cooperate between the public and private sector. We are also committed to providing excellent conditions for children- day nurseries, schools, etc.

Welcome to Orsa, we hope that you enjoy your stay with us!
