Hvar, Croatia

Hvar is a town and port on the south-western coast of the island of Hvar. It lies in a cove protected by the Pakleni Islands in the south and a low crest in the north. It's main attractions are a pleasant, sunny climate, natural beauties, various accommodation facilities, gastronomic offers (seafood galore), sports and recreational opportunities.

Tourists are attracted by a visit to the Pakleni Islands; a small archipelago in front of the Hvar port, where one may enjoy the sun and the sea in one of the many solitary, wooded coves. Restaurants and taverns on the island offer excellent fish specialities, with exquisite local wines.

Accommodation facilities include hotels, guest houses, apartments, boarding houses and campsites. Sports and recreational opportunities are excellent - beach yoga, tennis, table tennis, basketball, boccia, bowling, water sports.

Outside the main port town, one will find an exquisit source of natural, unspoilt beauty and sleepy villages with lots of hidden treasures waiting to be discoverd.

One such place is the village of Dol, located 15 minutes by scooter/car from Hvar and only 5 minutes from Stari Grad. It is home to a painters' atelier with mystical summer courtyard - open to the public for t-shirt painting or simply a soothing glass of home-made mint tea. There is also a quaint family restaurant called Kokot (Rooster) which serves local meat and fish specialties at reasonable prices.

From the Suncokret center, visitors may explore the footpaths through the pine and brush forest which lead to Sv. Nikola, the pinnacle of the island. The hike is organized by a charming local and involves a 2-3 hour pilgramage. The view of the azure Adriatic with its magnificent neighboring islands mixed with fresh, aromatic lavender breezes evokes a sense of wonder and oneness well worth the endeavor.
