The Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights are undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and beautiful of nature's phenomena. In classic mythology, aurora was the Roman goddess of the dawn; while "boreal" is a Latin word, meaning "north". What might be greater than viewing these impressive Northern Lights in the realm of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glaciers?

The name Aurora Borealis is Latin and means the dawn of the north. Galileo Galilei, the Italian scientist, is credited with the first use of the name in 1622 Auroras are formed in the outermost layer of the atmosphere when electrically charged particles from the sun, or particles excited by solar corpuscular radiation, collide with atmospheric atoms and molecules, primarily oxygen and nitrogen, at an altitude of between 80 and 500 kilometres (50350 miles), and form visible light. The highest probability of this to happen is close to earth's magnetic poles. They can be seen in auroral belts that form in the regions around the northern and southern geomagnetic poles.

No departures on Wednesdays or Fridays.
