Hamlet, Vikings, Kings and Castles

Explore the best of wonderful Copenhagen, the kings’ and bishops’ Roskilde and Helsingør (Elsinore) with Kronborg - the city and castle of both Hamlet and Holger the Dane. Great Danish kings and Vikings follow your tracks through soft, green landscapes and along the beautiful coast and beaches of Øresund and Kattegat.

Itinerary

Day 1     Copenhagen

Welcome to a capital where cyclists are kings! Enjoy the cozy and relaxed atmosphere, easy-going living and plenty of experiences in a combination of old-world charm and modern lifestyle. Copenhagen is a melting pot of interesting options and you can easily spend a few days here without getting bored.

Day 2     Copenhagen - Helsingor
Meals: Breakfast

Approx. 30 miles

You leave Copenhagen and go north. On the way to Helsingør you bike mostly along the Øresund coast and the famous beach at Bellevue invites to a swim in the clean, blue water. In Helsingør you can visit Kronborg Castle and say hello to Hamlet and the Danish stone hero Holger the Dane who sits in the cellar of the castle and protects safety and peace in Denmark.

Day 3     Helsingor - Hillerod
Meals: Breakfast

Approx. 17 or 29 miles

In 430 years from 1427 Helsingør became rich on collecting duties of all ships passing through Øresund. Take your time to explore the narrow streets of the old maritime city before you continue along the coast to the famous seaside resorts Hornbæk and Gilleleje. You bike leisurely through the woods of Gribskov, pass the beautiful lake Esrum Sø and stay overnight in Hillerød or Helsinge. An alternative route (much shorter) lets you experience some of the beautiful castles in North Zealand among which Fredensborg Palace (spring and autumn residence of the Royal Family, and therefore only part of the garden is open to the public) is a pearl but also Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød is worth a visit.

Day 4     Hillerod - Hundested
Meals: Breakfast

Approx. 25 - 34 miles

Also today you may choose between 2 nice routes. Either you go North to the sea and bike along the coast and wonderful beaches to charming small villages and leisure areas in Tisvildeleje and Liseleje, through the Tisvildeleje woods and nature park to Hundested at the bottom of the peninsula. Or you go West-North to Frederiksværk and enjoy small town cosiness on your way to either Hundested or Højby /Nykøbing Sjælland on the Odsherred peninsula on the other side of the Isefjord bay. (Ferry included).

Day 5     Hundested - Holbaek
Meals: Breakfast

Start the day with a nice ferry ride from the harbor in Hundested to Rørvig on the other side of the bay Isefjorden (25 minutes). You arrive at the peninsula Odsherred and have a nice ride along the coasts of the 3 bays Isefjord, Lammefjord and Holbæk Fjord to the medieval city Holbæk – a well-preserved city where you may find many buildings, streets and signs dating back to the 11th century.

Day 6     Holbaek - Roskilde
Meals: Breakfast

Approx. 29 miles

You bike along the Southern part of Isefjord bay, through a green countryside and small cities and continue the bike trip along Roskilde Bay. From a distance you can see Roskilde and the spires of the cathedral Roskilde Domkirke, which in 1995 was admitted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sarcophagi and tombs of 38 Danish kings and queens laid to rest here make this church special because nowhere else in the world are so many kings and queens buried in the same church. Visit also the Viking Ship Museum with both original Viking ships and replicas – or try to sail a small one yourself.

Day 7     Roskilde - Copenhagen
Meals: Breakfast

Approx. 25 miles

Through an extensive network of cycle paths you can ride carefree through woods, fields and suburbs within the green ring around the capital and arrive in wonderful Copenhagen. You stay in a nice hotel within walking distance of the famous sights, museums, attractions and Tivoli.

Day 8     Copenhagen
Meals: Breakfast

Departure after breakfast at the hotel - or extend your stay with a few days in our beautiful and charming city
