The King’s Road is an ancient travel route, which was used by kings and their messengers since the 13th century. The route follows an old postal road, which ran between Scandinavia and Russia. Along the route there are a wealth of historic manor houses, medieval churches, picturesque villages and charming old ironworks. The section featured here runs through Finland’s southern coastal region from Helsinki to Turku and on to Stockholm onboard a cruise ferry.

The Kings' messengers and postmen on foot or on horseback to deliver urgent messages from Stockholm to Turku used this ancient route in the 13th century. In the mid-14th century, the Kings Road became an artery road, along which manors, farmhouses, inns and taverns were built. The manor houses owned mighty noble families that provided overnight accommodation for Swedish Kings and Russian Czars alike. In the 18th century kings, czars, soldiers, bishops, artists and merchants in horse-driven carriages traveled between the east and west.
