Kokkedal Slot

Danish Castles

The castle is built on castle mounds dating back to the Viking Age. From the courtyard there is a beautiful view to the Limfjord, and the North Sea beach at Tranum is only a few miles away. The present castle builing was built in the 1540s by Lord High Constable Erik Banner with drawbridge, serrated gables, embrasures and a moat surrounding the castle. The Banner familys coat of arms dates back to the conquest of England in 1016. As a jailer of the later Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, Banner was responsible for the collapse of the Nordic Union. Later, Kokkedal Slot became the residence for Prince Erik, a cousin of the Danish king. It is told that Knight Lykkes pregnant daughter was immured alive in the castle, and her light footsteps are heard in the corridors from time to time. Prince Joachim has protected the restoration of the castle.

Kokkedal is situated in a nature area between the Limfjord and the North Sea, and the region offers several attractions, for example Skagen, an amusement park, the North Sea museum and the sandy beach at Tranum.
