The Old Inn is with 300 years behind it one of the oldest buildings in town.
The building was first mentioned in 1683 and has through the years housed a shoemaker, a fruit shop and a bakery. The house was in the beginning of 1900 used as a confectioners and Mutter Sam took over the house in 1920 and opened up Mutter Sams confectioners. Customers were served in two different parts of the house - one for women and one for men - and first floor was fitted up as rooms for lodgers. At that time the regular customers included actresses and actors of the old Odense Theatre on Sortebrødre Square as well as the later famous composer Carl Nielsen, who enjoyed his dinner here once a week.
In 1937 the tobacco manufacturer Stokkebye bought the building and after a gentle restoration the house was brought back to its original half-timbered house and fitted up as a restaurant. The house in Neder Street was included and the restaurant was extended and got its original name: The Old Inn.
Stokkebye fitted the house with valuable objects of art and antiques and The Old Inn was transformed into a great object of interest.
In 1956 the backyard and the galleries were restored and covered with a rolling glass roof and in 1963 the wine cellar was fitted up. On the 1st January Ann and Per Meyn took over the inn and since then yet another house in Neder Street has been included, a new modern kitchen and scullery have been built and four charming saloons on the first floor have been fitted up. In 2001 the restaurant was extended with a new wine cellar for approximately 20 people.
