Inlandsbanan takes you to some of the most interesting places in the varied landscape of inland Sweden. The journey begins in Kristinehamn and takes you all the way up to the magnificent Lapland wilderness with its salmon riversand mountain tops covered in snow nearly the whole year round. On the way you will admire the Zorn paintings in Dalarna and visit the heritage museum Jamtli History Land next to Lake Storsjön. The way north is lined withinteresting places and on arrival in Gällivare you mustn’t miss the view from

Dundret Mountain, a real highlight.

Itinerary

You make your own travel arrangements to Kristinehamn, where your package tour begins with an overnight stay. Once you are in Kristinehamn there are several sights and excursions that are definitely not to be missed. Perhaps a trip around the beautiful archipelago on the replica 17th century sailing ship Bojorten or shopping in the town’s delightful boutiques

After breakfast at your hotel you begin your journey north by train to new adventures. The first stage takes you through the historical landscape of Bergslagen marked by the mining industry

that flourished in the 18th century. The rolling forests are dotted with small lakes, reinforcing the magical quality of Värmland. The end destination of this day is Mora in Dalarna, by the shore of Lake Siljan.

Because of its delightful location on the shore of Lake Siljan and its rich cultural heritage there is much to see and do in Mora. We suggest you make time for a visit to Zorngården (entry included) or the Vasa Race museum or a walk along beautiful Siljan. In the afternoon the journey continues by train through the county of Härjedalen. Here you will come real up close with the wilderness when you travel through bear forests. In the evening we arrive at

Östersund, Jämtland’s county town.

Östersund is a true summer city with a great deal to offer. Take a walk to the heritage museum Jamtli History Land and meet up with people and places from days gone by. Entry is included. Or perhaps you want to discover the city on your own? Bikes can be hired from the tourist information office, where you can also pick up a map of cycling routes. Enjoy your bike ride!

We travel on through the southern parts of Lapland, taking a break at Storuman, where you can visit the station house, a listed building. In Sorsele we visit the Inlandsbanan museum, where we get an insight into how the railway was built more than 100 years ago.

Arvidsjaur offers a wide variety of activities, from fishing to canoeing or a visit to the Sami village Lappstaden. In the afternoon you embark on Inlandsbanan again and just before reaching Jokkmokk, you cross the Arctic Circle, where the train makes a stop. On the way to Gällivare you travel through the Laponia World Heritage Site. In Gällivare a guided tour is included in the evening. Until the 30th of July to the summit of Dundret, where you can enjoy the most astounding views in the light summer night, and after that date at the Laponia entrance and the exhibition about the World Heritage Laponia

Inlandsbanans most northern destination, Gällivare, also offers a wide variety of sights and activities. From the tourist information office, which lies right next to the railway station, you can get tips and ideas for an exciting day in Gällivare.

After an early breakfast, the journey turns back south towards Östersund. The scenery actually looks different seen in “reverse order”. Just before the train arrives Vilhelmina which is this day’s final destination, we make a dinner stop. Here you can enjoy price awarded fish-and charcuteri dishes, and you have the possibility to buy home some edible souvenirs.

In Vilhelmina you will have time to visit both Hembygdsmuseet museum and old church village Kyrkstan before the train departures. Make sure to have dinner before you embark the train since there is only one coffee break until you reach Östersund. You will now leave

Swedish Lapland and the journey continues past Strömsund. This landscape of lakes and mountains was, for instance, the inspiration to Beppe Wolgers’ film about Dunderklumpen and the giant Jorm. In the evening you arrive to the residential city of the count of Jämtland Östersund, by Lake Storsjön.

Today is the last day of you package tour and the train will take you back to Kristinehamn
