Trondheim and Mid-Norway Self Drive Tour

7 Days / 7 locations in Norway

Itinerary

Day 1     Trondheim
Accommodation: Clarion Hotel Grand Olav

ARRIVAL TRONDHEIM

Arrive by flight on own. Pick up rental car at the airport and drive to the hotel. Trondheim is a charming town with streets between colourful wooden houses and little shops. We recommend a visit to the Nidaros Cathedral (Nidaros Domen). The Cathedral has always played an important role in Norwegian history, especially due to a close connection to the Royal Family. The Norwegian crown jewels are on display in the Archbishop’s Palace right next to the cathedral.

Day 2     Trondheim - Verdal
Accommodation: Stiklestad Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

TRONDHEIM – VERDAL (96 KM)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive north via Hommelvik and Levanger to Stiklestad. Your hotel is situated in the same building as Stiklestad Museum. At the open air area of Stiklestad Museum you will find 30 well-preserved historical buildings, some dating back to the 17th century. Actors from the “Gårdimillom” theatre company re-enact, every season (from mid June to mid August), typical scenes and various activities that would have gone on in the various buildings.  Stiklestad is the battlefield where King Olav Haraldsson fell on the 29th of July 1030, and he became known as St. Olav. The battle of Stiklestad represents the introduction of Christianity in Norway. The battle and the saint king made it possible for Stiklestad to act as a symbol of both Christianity and the kingdom.

The area is known for its many vulnerable species (Bears - Ursus arctos, Wolverine - Gulo gulo, wolf and Lynx). Continue your tour via Bergsmoen to Fru Haugans Hotel. The hotel is located in the end of the picturesque street named Sjøgata in the city of Mosjøen. A walk up and down the historical streets with buildings dated back to the nineteenth century is highly recommended. MO I RANA – NAMSOS (326KM)

Breakfast at the hotel. Continue your tour towards Namsos and perhaps make a detour to Sandnesjøen on the island of Alsta. Sandnessjøen is a pleasant coastal town along the Kystriksveien (Coastal Route) where you may visit the 12th century church, 18th century parsonage, and the Petter Dass Museum, commemorating Northern Norway’s great 17th century parson poet. A great turist attraction is The Seven Sisters. The Seven Sisters form a majestic chain of peaks overlooking the shipping channel plied by the Hurtigruten. Thrusting their heads 1,000 meters above the shoreline, they form a dramatic backdrop to the myriad of islands and lush cultural landscape. The Sisters’ origins are to be found in the Ice Age; created by glaciers digging down into softer rocks, leaving the harder rocks behind, naked and scoured by the ice. The landscape around the Sisters some 20,000 years ago was a jumble of glacier tongues stretching in different directions, from which the peaks emerged as bare “nunataks”. After your visit to Alsta, continue the tour towards Namsos.
