Spitsbergen Winter Safari

3 Days / 4 locations in Svalbard, Norway and Norway

We set out on a 3 day tour across glaciers and frozen fjords, between mountains and icebergs, taking us miles away from civilisation. Svalbard is one and a half times the size of Denmark but has just 45 km of paved road. The region is so large that the only practical way of getting around in winter is by snowmobile. Enjoy a rare sense of freedom as you drive across one gigantic, white glacier after another. Marvel at the enormous icebergs on the east coast – but keep your eyes open – with a bit of luck you may spot a polar bear out on the ice!

Driving a snowmobile is relatively easy, but heading out on a long snowmobile tour on Svalbard requires a great deal of planning and experience, familiarity with the Svalbard landscape, climate and fauna, as well as mechanical expertise. Our tour leaders are among the most experienced in Svalbard. They take responsibility for every practical detail of the tour, and ensure that it is conducted safely.

Itinerary

Day 1     Longyearbyen
Meals: Dinner

9.00am pick up at your hotel.

Briefing, preparation and packing of equipment prior to commencement of the tour.

We start out from Longyearbyen towards the Russian settlement on Svalbard - Barentsburg. We check in at the hotel there, and leave some luggage behind before we head out for an afternoon trip. The guides will look at the weather and snow conditions when planning this excursion, but commonly head towards the glaciers in the inner part of Grønfjorden.

Day 2     Fridtjov Glacier - Van Mijenfjorden - Brentskaret
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

After breakfast we pack our sleds and set off south, towards the spectacular Fridtjov Glacier and Van Mijenfjorden. We drive along the fjord to the wide valley Reindalen and then onwards to the cosy Spitsbergen Expedition Lodge in Brentskaret. The tour leader will serve lunch en route, and dinner will be prepared in the evening when we arrive at the lodge.

Day 3     Longyearbyen
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch

Weather permitting we’ll finish our safari with an expedition to the remote east coast of Spitsbergen. The feeling of freedom you experience when driving across the vast glacier plateau is truly unforgettable. If we are lucky, we may see polar bears on the pack ice. We return to Longyearbyen around 5:00pm in the afternoon.
