Self-Drive Tour of Lofoten Islands

Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. Lofoten is known for a distinctive scenery with mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands.

Day 1     Bodo
Accommodation: Clarion Collection Grand

Arrive by flight at Bodø Airport. Pick up rental car and drive to the hotel. Bodø is famous for the world´s strongest tidal current, Saltstraumen, situated approx. 35 km from Bodø. The tidal current occurs every six hours and is caused by 400 million cubic metres of water flowing through the 3 km long and 150 m wide strait between the Saltenfjorden and the Skjerstadfjorden at speeds of up to 20 knots (excursion not included). Day 2     Bodo - Narvik
Accommodation: Quality Hotel Grand Royal

BODØ – NARVIK (301 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Narvik, a city which lies on a peninsula between the Beisfjord and the Rombaksfjord, at the foot of the 1200 meter high Fagernes Mountain. We recommend a tour on the cable car up the mountain or a visit to the Ofoten Museum which has on display exhibitions from the local cultural history. Day 3     Narvik - Nyvagar
Accommodation: Nyvagar Rorbuhotel

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will drive towards Lofoten which is a beautiful archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the worlds largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude. Day 4     Henningsvaer
Accommodation: Henningsvaer Bryggehotel
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you are only in short driving distance to your next stop, Henningsvær, situated at the foot of Mount Vågakaillen, consisting of a group of isles and islets spread out at random in the blue waters of the Vestfjord. With the beautiful mountains in the back and the surroundings of the sea, Henningsvær was a natural hub for fishermen and in the 1800’s, Henningsvær became one of the most prominent fishing villages in Lofoten. Here you will find an active, vibrant environment and well-preserved architecture which makes Henningsvær something quite unique.

Day 5     Nusfjord
Accommodation: Nusfjord Rorbu
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Continue to Nusford which is called “the real Lofoten” because of its location in a magnificent landscape encircled by steep mountains that rise up from the fjord arm of Nusfjord (the Lofoten Wall). It is one of Norway’s oldest and best conserved fishing villages with long traditions from the lofotfishing. 50 charming fishermen’s cabins are the travelling goal for thousands of tourists that want to experience Lofoten every year. Day 6     Reine
Accommodation: Reine Rorbuer
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to the west of Lofoten, by the entrance of the Reinefjord, where you will find the fishing village Reine. Here you have the majestic Lofoten Mountains and the North Sea as your closest neighbors. In the summer season you will find endless days and midnight sun, and in the winter you have short days and amazing northern light.

Day 7     Bodo
Accommodation: Clarion Collection Grand
Meals: Breakfast

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive towards Moskenes for your ferry towards Bodø (duration approximately 3-4 hours) and arrival at your hotel in Bodø.

Breakfast at the hotel. Check out from the hotel. Drive to Bodø Airport and drop off rental car.

 

Notes

The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 25 years and drivers must have held a driving licence for at least 12 months prior to hiring the car. The price includes unlimited mileage, Collision Damage Waiver, Theft protection and tax. Petrol, GPS and other surcharges are not included.
