Day 4     Vik
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Today we pass through Iceland's southern most town called Vik and proceed to the southern most point in Iceland the basalt cliffs of Reynisfjarda where we walk among the billions of odd shaped stones next to the mighty North Atlantic. Hopefully if the tides are right and the weather cooperates, a journey around the cliffs to the sea caves of Lava and basalt around the bend. We also visit Dyrholaey, one nesting site of the puffins in the summer but a year round extravaganza of carved rock formations, including the famous Dyrholaey rock where ships and small vessels can pass right through on a calm day. A stunt pilot, actually flew a plane through in 1995. This is hard to believe, but true...you'll see why. Then we head for a special lunch, where else, but ON the glacier Myrdalsjokull. We make the 10 km journey in a SNOWCAT as there might be snow at the base camp but more than likely will be plenty of snow were we will be stopping. The lunch will be complete if desired with Martini's "shaken not stirred" of course in natural glacier ice. We'll have lunch about 3,000 feet high. Then we'll go to the glacier tongue at Solheimurjokull, again, weather permitting for a "walk on the wild side" to get our crampons and again weather permitting walk on the wild side to this rapidly disappearing glacier tongue. We also visit the 62 meter high waterfall called Skogar a powerful beauty that can some days be walked nearly right up to. A clear day may produce a sparkling rainbow in the falls. Cameras love it. With the limited daylight this time of year there is another waterfall about 30 KM down the road we want to visit. This one is called Seljalandsfoss a tall but thin 65 meter high waterfall which allows you to approach just a few feet from it. In the evening and at night it is bathed in floodlights. Overnight tonight will be at Hellisholar Cabins known as the little houses on the prarie. Hot tubs and a delicious mountain lamb dinner at the "main house" await after check in and a short rest and reorientation of the days events.

Day 5     Vestmannaeyjar
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Today we leave the cabins at first light for another short drive and a shorter flight (about 6 minutes) as we shuttle everyone over to the famous island of Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmanneyjar Island chain (4700 residents) that sits right on the Mid-Atlantic ridge. The island is the home to two volcanoes, one hundreds of years old and the other that will soon celebrate it's 37th birthday. This one started erupting on this inhabited by 5600 residents at the time in 1973. It all started early one morning near 2 AM in the back yards of some of the residents. The entire island had to be evacuated, and was in about four hours...but you'll hear all about this from a very special guide that was a child when it all happened and was among the evacuees. When they tell the story, they relive the night, and it has very special meaning. You'll also at least partially climb this volcano still warm to the touch just a few inches below the surface. So warm in fact that we will have a local baker bury some dough in the volcano a few hours before you arrive so that when you do, the BREAD will be ready to slice and eat. The film about this night will be available if you like as will a chance to wander about this very special place. We'll be taking a mid afternoon flight back to Bakki airport and spend another night at the cabins of Helliholar....and the hot tub too.

Day 6     Hekla - Landmannalaugar
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Today we head for one of Iceland's and Europe's most unpredictable volcanoes known as Hekla. We will explore the area fully and we'll see evidence of some of the 40 plus eruptions of this volcano since Iceland was discovered in 874 AD. Now, we want to also explore as much as is possible the area around Landmannalauger, but November is generally a very tough month to go very deep into the interior. However, there is plenty of exploration all over this area and around the valley known as Thorsadalur and the guide will have all kinds of possibilities ready based on the weather of the day. Hopefully, we'll be able to actually go swimming in a natural hot pool, outdoors, in the middle (some would say) of nowhere. Overnight will be (where else) but at the Hotel Hekla, with a good meal. Oh, did I forget to mention that this volcano is set to erupt at anytime, yet again. She only gives a thirty minute notice no matter but the magma levels of the volcano have recently been measured and they are only a few kilometers below the mountain when they should be near 30 kilometers down. MAYBE !!
