Fairytales and beautiful landscapes, easygoing lifestyle and maritime spirits are all significant elements at Funen, the archipelago and the South Funen Sea is one of the small wonders of Denmark. This bike trip takes you across most of Funen to the island Aeroe, to Odense - to the city of the Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen and to many interesting places in this area.

The fairytales written by the Danish poet H. C. Andersen are famous and loved all over the world, and it is easy to find signs related to him everywhere in Funen. He was born and grew up in Odense, the capital of Funen, but he lived most of his adult life in Copenhagen – or travelling. Whereever he went, he had a significant influence on everything and everybody surrounding him.

Itinerary

Welcome to Funen and to old, historic Nyborg, where Danish kings preferred to stay here in the royal castle, which is the oldest one in the Nordic countries. For more than 400 years up to 1560 Nyborg was the capital and center of Denmark. Nowadays it’s a charming city where you can easily follow the trails and signs back in time. Overnight.

Nyborg – Svendborg (app. 48-54km or 35 miles)

Today you will pass or perhaps visit castles and manor houses on your way to Svendborg. “Holckenhavn Slot” is just outside Nyborg at the beautiful Holckenhavn Fjord. The route goes partly through soft waving hills inland and along the coast with stunning views to the sea and the islands Thurø, Tåsinge and Langeland until you reach Svendborg.

Svendborg – Faaborg (app. 25-30 km or 20 miles)

Cycling route no. 8 along the sea between Svendborg and Fåborg is the most idyllic on at Funen. It shows South Funen from its most beautiful side and offers splendid views of the archipelago. The gently undulating terrain leads you past manor houses and numerous romantic half-timbered houses and small villages. If you want to visit the island Ærø, you may sail from Svendborg to Ærøskøbing, cycle the island and return directly to Faaborg (ferry not included)

Faaborg - Assens (app. 43 km or 27 miles)

Before leaving the charming merchant’s city by the sea with its cozy narrow streets you might visit the Museum of Funen Art in Faaborg (entrance not included) which is well worth a visit for anyone interested in art. Outside Faaborg you will see the “Funen Alps” (126m) with the famous moraine landscape at Svanninge Bakker. Enjoy the varying landscape on your way to Assens.

Assens - Middelfart (app. 43 km or 27 miles)

Did you take a stroll through the cobbled pedestrian streets? The streets of Assens have been awarded as some of the most beautiful streets in Denmark. Along your tour today you will pass the biggest estate at Funen: Wedellsborg which is beautifully located in a huge deer park, formed by the woods of the peninsula. Later you will arrive in the historic Maritime and trading town Middelfart, which is also known as the City of Bridges.

Middelfart - Odense (App. 56 km or 35 miles)

Before leaving Middelfart you might want to make a small detour to visit Hindsgavl Castle and enjoy a walk in the beautiful park. At Sletterød we recommend a visit at the open farm Billeshøj and Fun Park Fyn which both have interesting offers for adults as well as children (entrance not included). Visit Paddesø church and Fyns Akvarium with fish from all over the world and parrot aviaries (entrance not included). In Morud you will find the largest bison farm in Europe, Ditlevsdal – a nice place for a coffee break before riding through the Langesoe Woods. From here you will soon arrive in Odense.

Odense - Nyborg (app. 33-48 km or 29 miles)

Today you will cycle to Kerteminde, which is a very charming, old fishing town. Go under water at the maritime centre “Fjord & Bælt” or enjoy the art at the “Johansses Larsen Museum” (entrance not included). After Kerteminde you will ride along the coast to Nyborg. For a shorter route, you may skip Kerteminde and go directly across Funen from Odense to Nyborg.

Approx. 33 miles

Today you may have a castle trip. Start with a detour to Valdemar’s Castle on Tåsinge, and then the trip continues past various manor houses and finishes at Nyborg Castle. Some parts of the route follow the coast up North and sometimes the bike road twists inland.

The tour has ended. Prolong your stay with extra days in Nyborg or perhaps one more day in Odense or check out after breakfast.
