Itinerary

Important: If you have added extra nights in Reykjavik before your tour, the guide will meet your group for the start of the tour on Day 2 according to the standard “Arctic Powers” itinerary.

Today is open for your activities. Airport transfer is not included, but we are happy to help you arrange shared or private transfers. One possible suggestion might be to visit the Blue Lagoon on your way from the airport (bookings must be made in advance).

Overnight in Reykjavik. No meals are included.

Active Geothermal Area – Surreal Volcanic Landscapes– Basalt Citadels – Relaxing Hot Springs

Breakfast at your hotel. Assisted transfer to Reykjavík Domestic Airport for early morning Air Iceland flight to Akureyri. If the skies are clear, you’ll get great views of Iceland’s interior wilderness. Meet your local guide at Akureyri Airport and start on your North Iceland exploration! The day begins with a drive through beautiful alpine scenery en route to Godafoss (the Waterfall of the Gods). Here glacial water thunders around surrounding lava to create a beautiful half-circle shaped cascade. Travel to the unforgettable Lake Myvatn area, a geological wonderland that includes the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters at Skutustadir and Laxa Salmon River. Some of the most bizarre attractions in the region are the bubbling mud pits and vibrant colors of Namaskard geothermal area. Looming over the area is Krafla, the volcano that created this bizarre wonderland and whose energy provides power and hot water to the region. Myvatn’ s fantastical landscapes have made it a filming location for the popular HBO Game of Thrones series, as well as several Hollywood movies. Top off your amazing Myvatn visit with a relaxing soak in the geothermal Nature Baths before overnighting at your hotel.

Dinner and overnight in Lake Mývatn area. The hotel is in an ideal location to view northern lights, and if conditions are right tonight your group will go on a brief walk near the hotel to catch a glimpse. (Oct-April)

Mountain and Fjord Views – Historical Town – Award-Winning Museum – Icelandic Craft Beer Heritage

Breakfast at your hotel. Head along scenic roads to beautiful Eyjafjordur, Iceland’s longest fjord, and then onto the Trollaskagi (Troll Peninsula). Known as the “Icelandic Alps,” Trollaskagi offers some of the highest mountains in Iceland; the views of steep mountains plunging to the black-sand coastline are breath-taking. The surreal rock formations make it easy to see how the peninsula got its name. Drive through three mountain tunnels and pass through colorful fishing villages. Visit Siglufjordur, a town with beautifully-preserved historical buildings set in a scenic fjord. After lunch (on your own), visit the award-winning Herring-Era Maritime Museum. Many Icelandic historians believe it was Siglufjordur’ s herring “gold rush” of the early 20th century that helped bring modernization to Iceland. At the museum, you will be introduced to the history of the herring fishing industry and be invited to explore the museum’s three buildings before sampling traditional rye bread, local herring and Icelandic schnapps.

Next, take a closer look at Eyjafjordur Fjord, where you’ll visit Kaldi, Iceland’s first microbrewery. You will see how this craft beer is made and learn about the interesting history of the company. You will also get to taste some of the locally brewed beer, too.

The day ends in Akureyri, the beautiful northern town that has become internationally popular as a winter recreation destination. After a brief tour of the town, check into your hotel. Dinner is on your own at one of Akureyri’ s many restaurants.

Open Day to enjoy Akureyri and surroundings

Breakfast at hotel in the morning. Today is open for you to enjoy Akureyri and surroundings. Though small in population the “capital of North Iceland” has a lively culture and outdoor recreation scene. You’ll find activities to suit all interests. Enjoy exploring the museums, galleries and cafés. If you like outdoor fun, visit the nearby Hlidarfjall resort, just minutes away by cab, or take a swim in the geothermal pool complex. A variety of fun day tours is available from horseback riding to whale watching. we can assist you with booking day tours.

Later, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your late afternoon/early evening flight to Reykjavík. Group transfer to your hotel in Reykjavík. The rest of the evening is open for your own activities.

Dinner is on your own. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Breakfast at hotel. On your own, transfer to Keflavik International Airport for your flight. Transfers are not included, but we can book them for you. We recommend departing your hotel no later than 3-4 hours before your flight.
