Self-Drive tour from Akureyri spending 4 days in and around North of Iceland. Discover the stunning natural wonders at the Lake Myvatn area, then continue south along the ring road, crossing the East fjords and ending the tour in Reykjavik city.

With direct flight from Keflavik International airport to Akureyri town, this tour highlights all of the country's well known pearls in the North of Iceland with four days spent in the surrounding of Akureyri, as well as discovering the stunning natural wonders at the Lake Myvatn area.

Then you will continue along the ring road, exploring the scenic coastline of the East fjords and the dramatic landscape of south of Iceland, ending the tour in Reykjavik city.

Iceland's Second Largest City - Botanical Garden - Museums

Flight to Akureyri, the "Capital of the North" and enjoy your day exploring the town.

Beautiful Coastline - Herring Tradition - Viking Horses

Pick up your rental car.

Travel by one of Iceland´s most beautiful coastline at Tröllaskagi and enjoy some unique view towards the North Atlantic Ocean. Drive through quaint fishing villages, one of them being Siglufjordur fjord, famous for its herring tradition. Travel towards the towering mountains and horse-breeding valley of Skagafjörður and from there return to Akureyri.

Optional: River rafting in Skagafjörður; horse riding in Skagafjörður; visit to the Herring Museum.

Whale Watching - Glacier Carved Gorge

Drive north to the fishing port of Húsavík and around Tjörnes peninsula. Visit Ásbyrgi, a magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon and Jökulsárgljúfur National Park.

Explore the natural wonders of Lake Mývatn and surrounding area, including the mystical lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the volcanic area of Krafla along with the colorful sulfurous slopes of Námaskarð pass, Proceed to the mighty Dettifoss waterfall, before heading across the highland plateau to Egilsstaðir in the east.

Optional: Bird museum in Mývatn.

Narrow Fjords - Steep Mountains - Picturesque Coastline - Mineral Collection

Approximate mileage: ca. 300 km / 185 miles

Drive through the spectacular East Fjords, where towering mountains plunge vertically into the ocean. The journey continues to the town of Höfn in Hornafjörður, also known as the lobster capital of northern Europe.

Optional: Petra's stone collection; boat tour to Papey Island.

Europe's Largest Glacier - Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs - Europe's Largest National Park

Approximate mileage: ca. 200 km / 125 km

Drive to the shimmering icebergs and still, milky waters of Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon before continuing to Skaftafell National Park where a nature hike is recommended. Onwards to the picturesque village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Optional: Jeep tour to Vatnajökull glacier; boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon; glacier hike in Skaftafell area.

Lava Fields - Black Sand Beaches of the South Shore - Puffin Colony - Thundering Waterfalls

Approximate mileage: ca. 260 km / 160 miles

Drive along the spectacular south coast, a sweeping landscape of sandy deserts, rocky shores and rolling farmland sandwiched between snow-capped glaciers, mountains and the ocean. Return to Reykjavík.

Optional: Boat tour to the Westman Islands, evening tour to the Blue Lagoon.
