Alta Winter Adventure

6 Days / 1 location in Norway

Experience nature's wonder and the Sami Culture of Northern Norway!

Itinerary

Day 1     Alta
Accommodation: Scandic Alta Hotel

Arrive by flight. Transfer on own (not included) from Alta Airport to the hotel. In the town of the Northern Lights, there is a great range of activities and adventures, all framed by the fantastic blue light and contrasts which are so distinctive of Norwegian Lapland in winter. Here you can explore the windswept plain by snowmobile or with your own team of dogs. Add some culture and pay a visit to a Sami camp or the Alta Museum. The climate in Alta is dry and stable. On winter evenings, you have a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights over the town. The Polar Night in Alta lasts from November to January, after which the days grow gradually longer.

Day 2     Alta
Accommodation: Scandic Alta Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

ALTA - HUNTING THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Day free for leisure. In the evening it’s time to chase the Northern Lights. At 7.00pm you will be picked up at the meeting point and taken by car to the best viewpoints without light pollution. If it is overcast in Alta, we will travel to another place on the coast or inland. The Northern Lights guides are photographers and can help with the settings on your camera so you capture the best shots possible of this natural phenomenon. We do not provide a Northern Lights guarantee, but in the 2014/15 season we found the Northern Lights on about 90 % of our tours. Return to the hotel between 11.30pm and 01.00am.

Drive your own dog sled or relax and enjoy the scenery as a passenger. We take you through the pine forest following the banks of the Alta River, or up through the Alta Valley to the Finnmarksvidda mountain plain. We serve tea/coffee and cakes in our lavvo or outdoors around an open fire and chat about training and racing dogs in Finnmarksløpet, Europe's longest dogsled race at 1000km. After you tour, transfer back to Alta. Evening free for leisure.

ALTA – SNOW SHOEING & ICE FISHING

Breakfast buffet at the hotel. At 10:00am you will be picked up at the meeting point and drive towards the forest. This is the classic Norwegian outdoor experience! Strap on snowshoes and head out into the forest, along with an Alaskan husky pulling a pulka with extra gear. Look for animal tracks and enjoy the crisp forest air. Drill into the ice of a frozen river or lake, and see what you can catch. Take time out for lunch at a lavvo (herdsman's tent) around an open fire, and then hike back. Remember your camera - there are plenty of photo opportunities! Transfer back to Alta at 2.30pm. Evening free for leisure. Please note: departures every day, except Sundays.

In daytime, the view is magnificent and the thrill of driving such a fun vehicle is exhilarating!
